How to Lay Circular Patio Pavers – Easy Steps

You must ensure you take all the safety precautions before laying the sandstone circles or other circular pavers. Also, make sure the materials and colours you choose for your pavers must blend well with the overall style of your home. Here is the step-by-step procedure to lay circular patio pavers.

Step 1 – Planning

The first and foremost step is to plan a layout for your circular patio. Locate where you want to pave the circle, take measurements and mark out the area. Don’t forget to mark some extra space in case of an error and for edge restraint. This will help you incorporate different patio design ideas and create a perfect paving circle.

Step 2 – Digging the Surface

Once you’ve properly marked your layout, it’s time to dig out that area. However, the depth of your excavation will depend on your desired height and the depth of your embedment. Dig 9-10″ deep in the outermost designated region. Plan for at least 4″ of compacted 3/4″ minus gravel and some breathing room.

Step 3 – Setting Up the Foundation

A solid foundation is important if you want your circular patio to be strong. Spread the 3/4″ minus gravel on the surface. Spread your gravel in 2″ lifts, compacting it with a plate compactor between each lift. For pedestrian uses, we advise using a 4′′ gravel base. Using a rake, spread the gravel until it is fairly level, then use a straight board to smooth out any bumps.

Make sure your gravel base must be level and devoid of any rises or bellies greater than 1/8 inch. Any flaws greater than these will show up in the finished output.

Step 4 – Spread the Sand Layer

Now, spread the layer of sand on the surface, on top of the gravel, to create a stable bedding layer. Make sure it is smooth and level, as your natural stone pavers will be laid on top.

Step 5 – Laying the Pavers

Once you have made sure the surface is smooth and level, start laying the circular patio pavers. Remember that you are laying a paving circle, so start from the centre. Start laying the pavers with the centre ones. There will be a differently shaped stone for the centre. So, lay that one first. You have to walk on your levelled sand. So, don’t worry. You can fill the voids once you finish laying your stones.

Step 6 – Install the Edge Restraint

Once the circular patio pavers are laid, install the edge restraint to keep your patio in its shape. You can use a plastic edge restraint as it is much easier to install than concrete.

Step 7 – Finishing Touches

After laying the pavers, it’s time for patio pointing. You’ll need to dump fine sweeping sand on your patio pavers and spread it evenly on the entire surface. You should spread the sand until it’s completely filled into the joints.

Conclusion

You can lay a perfect circular patio paver in your outdoor space in seven easy steps. Before you start laying the pavers, you need to discuss this with the professionals. Otherwise, you might end up ruining the look of your patio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the frequently asked questions regarding circular patios to help you better understand the laying process.

Q1. How do you lay slabs in a circle?

Start at the centre and work your way outward, placing each concentric circle in order to create the perfect paving circle. Leave a jointing space of approximately 15mm between each stone.

Q2. Can I lay slabs just on the soil?

You can lay slabs on the soil, but it is not recommended. Laying the slabs depends on the type of soil on which you are laying the stones. If you expect high traffic, laying slabs directly on the soil would not be a great choice.

Q3. How big should a circular patio be?

It depends on your usage. If you want to create a dining area, then at least 10×10 feet would be recommended. If you have a big family and want a dining space, you can increase it by 15×15 feet.
